For those wanting a hard copy of the book\, email dei@sc4.edu. An ebook version also is available\, off-campus users will be prompted to login using their SC4 Portal username and password. \n\n\n\nFor questions related to this event or DEI related topics\, email dei@sc4.edu.

SUMMARY:'We Are Still Here' presentation for Native American History Month
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Native American History Month\, the Office of Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion is sponsoring a presentation titled ‘We Are Still Here’ by Banashee (Joe) Cadreau and Giddigongookskwe (Jade) Green. \n\n\n\nThe event will be a discussion and presentation on Indigenous culture and history in Michigan\, the United States and Canada. The importance of identity and the real history of the three fires people of Michigan (Ojibwa\, Odawa and Botawatami) and how we are still here and why our history was never told due to colonization and assimilation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBanashee is an enrolled member of the federally recognized Sault St. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. He was raised in both traditional and urban upbringings\, both on reservation and a major metropolitan area. In his adolescent years\, refusing to acknowledge his culture led to many difficult times as he struggled to find his place in the world. He later recognized his calling was to fight for social justice and equity. He is an active community advocate for Anishinaabe people and all Indigenous people throughout the country and globally. \n\n\n\nHe travels across the state delivering diversity presentations for schools\, universities\, museums and corporate clients. \n\n\n\nGiddigongookskwe\, a 14-year old from Howard City\, is co-founder of Bimose Ode. She has a passion for speaking about her journey with her Indigenous identity and issues that indigenous youth face today and in the future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe oldest of four siblings she helps to instill traditions and a sense of Native pride for her family. She is particularly concerned with issues surrounding racism in the battle for clean water and access to healthy food. She spends her time volunteering and getting involved in social activism and community organizations. \n\n\n\nTo reserve a seat for this event\, email dei@sc4.edu. \n\n\n\nLOCATION: SC4 Fine Arts Theatre \n\n\n\nLIVESTREAM at 10 a.m. at this link.

SUMMARY:Disabusing Disability: Demonstrating That Disability Doesn't Mean Inability
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of National Disability Month\, SC4’s Office of Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion is sponsoring a presentation titled ‘Disabusing Disability: Demonstrating That Disability Doesn’t Mean Inability’ by Dr. Oluwaferanmi Okanlami. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDisability is regularly neglected in conversations about diversity\, equity and inclusion\, yet it is one demongraphic that we may all identify with one day. Therefore\, disability should serve to demonstrate that we are all much more similar than we are different. \n\n\n\nAs a disabled\, black\, Nigerian immigrant\, cis-gender\, heterosexual\, male\, physician\, athlete\, this presentation will talk about the intersectionality between all of those identities\, striving to demonstrate that disability is not inability\, and encouraging us to all people to demonstrate what they can do\, rather than attempting to limit them based on what they can’t. Dr. O will wrap up with practical examples of what is being done at The University of Michigan to embody this message. \n\n\n\nAt the end of the session\, each participant should: \n\n\n\nHave expanded their definition of what “diversity” can mean in medicine.Be able to acknowledge their own implicit biases regarding diversity (regarding disability\, race\, etc.).Learn how certain places are advocating to increase diversity\, equity and inclusion.Leave with the understanding that disability doesn’t necessarily mean inability and with the desire to disseminate that knowledge through their respective institutions.\n\n\n\nTo register for the event\, email dei@sc4.edu. \n\n\n\nLOCATION: SC4 Fine Arts Theatre
