PORT HURON – Two St. Clair County Community College students recently earned statewide academic recognition.
Maggie Kimmerly and Steven DeCoste were named to the All-SC4 Academic Team by a panel of college faculty members, which automatically qualified both for the All-Michigan Academic Team. They each were honored March 14 at a luncheon in Lansing.
Kimmerly is a sophomore from Kimball Township studying general education but is interested in psychology. In addition to excelling in the classroom, Kimmerly is committed to serving her community. She has organized a Red Cross Blood Drive and volunteered for soup kitchens, food distributions and senior citizen meal delivery, all while working in resident care at a local senior home.
“There is a big need for helping people in our community,” Kimmerly said. “I feel like we all should be giving back in whatever way we can. It is very important.”
DeCoste, a Blue Water Middle College student from East China Township, is working toward his associate degree in general education and is passionate about anything related to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). DeCoste tutors in the Achievement Center. His favorite subjects to help out fellow students are multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.
“I’m very honored to be a member of the All-Michigan Academic Team,” DeCoste said. “The banquet was a great experience, and I’m glad I got to attend and meet so many accomplished individuals. I want to thank the faculty and tutors at St. Clair County Community College for supporting me, along with the Blue Water Middle College for giving me the opportunity to accomplish what I have.”
