Athletic Roundup: Skippers Cross Country opens season at Oakland

SC4 cross country teams

The Skippers women’s and men’s cross-country teams opened their seasons Friday, Sept. 1 at the Golden Grizzly Invitational in Rochester.

Both teams finished 11th out of 12 teams in the event, which featured community college and four-year university squads.

The SC4 men’s team managed 290 points, which was fourth among the community college teams. Macomb CC came in fifth overall with 116 points followed by Oakland CC (eighth, 235) and Mott CC (ninth, 246). Kirtland CC was 12th at 347.

Johnathon Ridley paced the Skippers with a time of 22 minutes, 4.4 seconds, which was good enough for 57th place. Josh Johnson and Cody Sanchez crossed the finish line in 67th and 68th place at 22:33.0 and 22:38.5, respectively.

For the girls team, Audrey Sylvia was the top finisher at 74th (18:25.4). Madison Woodall ran 18:44.5 for 78th place and Cat Gryspeerd came in 81st (19:21.4). The Skippers totaled 307 points, while Macomb with sixth (173) and Mott 10th (305).

Coach James Frank’s Skippers return to action Friday, Sept. 8, at the Jackson College Invitational.

Volleyball

It was a rough trip to Ohio this past weekend for the volleyball team.

After defeating Lake Michigan CC, 25-19, 25-13, 15-25, 25-19, and Mott CC 28-26, 26-24, 17-25, 25-23, at quad event Thursday, Aug. 31, in Flint, the Skippers went winless in four matches Friday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Owens Express Invitational in Toledo, OH.

The Skippers lost in four games to Wallace State CC and were swept 3-0 by McHenry County College, Waubonsee CC and Owens CC to fall to 3-7 on the season.

Coach Ray Cornwell’s squad hits the road for non-conference matches this weekend. The Skippers play Concordia University’s junior varsity team Thursday, Sept. 7, before traveling to Lakeland CC to play Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9 in the Shannon McBride Memorial Tournament.
