PORT HURON, Mich. — The St. Clair County Community College volleyball team (4-3 overall) played its first three home matches on Wednesday afternoon and evening as part of the annual Skippers Quad inside the SC4 Fieldhouse. SC4 defeated Henry Ford College and Kirtland Community College by 3-0 scores, while completing a 3-1 victory over Kalamazoo Valley Community College in the middle match.
The Skippers will not have too long to wait until their next set of matches, as the squad is set to travel to Petoskey, Mich., for the Buffalo Wild Wings & Corktown Pizza Timberwolves Quad hosted by North Central Michigan College. SC4 will face NCMC on Friday at 2:30 p.m., before two matches on Saturday against Kellogg Community College (11 a.m.) and Alpena Community College (1 p.m.).
VS. HENRY FORD (25-12, 25-10, 25-9)
The Skippers handled the Hawks throughout the first contest of the afternoon — surrendering just 31 total points to the visitors across the three sets. SC4 won by 13, 15, and 16 points, respectively.
The second set might have been the most dominant for the hosts, as the team hit a combined .556 (12 kills to just two errors on 18 attempts). They hit .353 as a group in the opening set and .333 in the decider.
Sophomores Brooklynn Haack (New Baltimore, Mich. / Anchor Bay) and Ava Oleski (Lexington, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) led the way with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, while each hit nearly .400 for the match. The most impressive hit percentage came from freshman Lucy Mercer (Otsego, Mich. / Otsego), who downed seven balls on eight attempts for a whopping .875 kill percentage.
SC4 had 21 total points from service aces, which is its best mark of the season to this point. Sophomore Addison Bolen (Maple Ridge, Mich. / Carson-City Crystal) clocked in with nine aces, with freshman Kylie Traver (Roscommon, Mich. / Roscommon) right behind her with seven.
VS. KALAMAZOO VALLEY (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22)
In what was the most competitive affair of the day, the Skippers and Cougars duked it out for four sets. SC4 needed a heroic comeback in the first set via a number of aces to take the first set, before KVCC nabbed the second. The final two sets were close but went the way of the home squad.
Freshman Chloe Johnson (Macomb, Mich. / Utica) was exceptionally strong at the net, as she finished with the team’s lone two solo blocks and added four block assists. Traver had a team-best 24 digs, while sophomore Bella McCamman (Otsego, Mich. / Otsego) led SC4 with five aces. Bolen and freshman Alianna Sutberry (Portland, Mich. / Portland) chipped in with 17 and 11 assists, respectively.
Oleski concluded the match with 15 kills on 29 attempts for a match percentage of .414.
VS. KIRTLAND (25-22, 25-17, 25-21)
SC4 completed the afternoon sweep with a shutout of Kirtland in the Firebirds’ second ever match as a program. KCC made the Skippers work, as the match was close throughout, but the hosts prevailed in all three sets.
Freshman Morgan Janowski (Chesterfield, Mich. / L’Anse Creuse North) led the charge for the Skippers with a team-high 10 kills, while Haack (nine), Oleski (eight), and Johnson (seven) were right behind.
Sophomore Krysta Basic (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville) recorded a team-best three service aces, while Traver had 18 digs and McCamman 11.
