PORT HURON, MI. — Students in St. Clair County interested in pursuing a career in education will have a new opportunity close to home this fall through the partnership between St. Clair County Community College (SC4) and Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU).
“SVSU is thrilled to offer this course for SC4 students, especially those aspiring for a four-year bachelor’s degree from our University. This marks an important step towards more comprehensive SVSU course and program offerings in Port Huron,” said Dr. George Grant, Jr., SVSU President.
Beginning September 1, SVSU will offer MATH 110 – Mathematics for Elementary Teachers on the SC4 Port Huron campus. The course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. in the SC4 Welcome Center, Room 206/208. The course will be taught by Dr. Brian Robertson, a current SC4 mathematics professor.
“SC4 is excited to partner with Saginaw Valley State University to offer a Math course on our campus this fall. The course fulfills a requirement of multiple SVSU Education degree pathways,” said Dr. Pete Lacey, Chief Collaboration Officer and SVSU Liaison at SC4. “We continue to work closely with the SVSU team to bring 4-year opportunities to our community. The availability of this on-campus course allows students to begin their journey toward a rewarding career in teaching. We look forward to working with SVSU to help inspire and prepare the next generation of educators right here in our community.”
MATH 110 is required for students pursuing SVSU degrees in Elementary Education – Early Childhood, Lower Elementary (K-3), and Upper Elementary (3-6), as well as Middle School Math Education (grades 5-9).
The course introduces the mathematical content and reasoning skills needed by future elementary and middle school educators. Topics include mathematical reasoning, patterns, numeration systems, computation, estimation, number theory, properties of whole numbers, integers and rational numbers, percentages, measurement, geometry, probability and statistics. Students will also explore the history of mathematics and mathematical concepts from various cultural perspectives.
Teacher candidates will develop the ability to communicate mathematical ideas both orally and in writing while connecting mathematical concepts to the physical world.
The course prerequisite is MATH 082 or equivalent.
