MARYSVILLE, Mich. — The St. Clair County Community College (SC4) men’s soccer squad (2-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 MCCAA) played in its home opener on Sunday afternoon against visiting Alpena Community College (1-4-0 overall, 0-2-0 MCCAA). The Skippers made it a grand homecoming, as the hosts connected for 10 goals and downed the Lumberjacks 10-1 at SC4 Soccer Field at Morton Park.
It was the third time in program history that the team has scored 10 or more goals in a single match. The previous two were in back-to-back matches in the inaugural 2024-25 season at Terra State (11-1, most goals in program history) and vs. Jackson (10-2) on September 21 and 28, 2024.
SC4 opened the scoring just 4:22 into the match, as sophomore Andre Balta (Tallinn, Estonia / Tallinna Arte Gumnaasium) connected on his second goal of the season from freshman Marcos Gutiérrez Sánchez (Valladolid, Spain / IES Alejandria) and sophomore Luis Carlos Farinas (Venta de Baños, Palencia, Spain / IES Recesvinto).
It was just over 23 minutes until the next Skippers’ goal, which came in the 27th minute courtesy of freshman Giorgio Cicero (Modica, Ragusa, Italy / Liceo Scientifico Enrico Fermi Ragusa). His second goal of 2026 was an unassisted marker. Farinas made it 3-0 SC4 in the 42nd minute (first of the season), with the assists coming from Balta and freshman Mykolas Gorbaciovas (Vilnius, Lithuania / Vilnius Zverynas Gymnasium). That would be the score at intermission, with the Skippers maintaining a 24-3 edge in shots.
The floodgates opened in the second half as the home squad managed seven more goals in just over 23 minutes of game action.
Cicero’s third of the season and second of the day made it 4-0, as Balta and sophomore Christian Vazquez-Nimbu (Illescas, Spain / IES Condestable Alvaro de Luna) provided the helpers. The 5-0 goal was Balta’s second of the game, third of the season, and fourth point on the afternoon. His tally in the 50th minute was assisted by Vazquez-Nimbu and sophomore Viktor Petrovic (Krusevac, Serbia / Gimnazija Krusevac).
Cicero completed his hat trick in the 56th minute (fourth of 2026) on a feed from Farinas (6-0 SC4). Following a foul in the box, Alpena’s Gavin Cole scored on the ensuing penalty kick to put the Lumberjacks on the board in the 58th minute.
Freshmen Carlos Fadul and his twin brother Samuel Fadul Estevez (Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic / Instituto Iberia) scored the next two goals in the 69th and 75th minutes, respectively. Carlos’ came on a penalty kick, while Samuel’s was assisted by Sanchez and Farinas. It was the first collegiate goal for both players.
Vazquez-Nimbu was responsible for the final two goals of the match, as he scored 24 seconds apart to get to the final score of 10-1. They were his first and second goals of 2026. Assists went to Farinas, Carlos Fadul, and freshman Ansh Attri (Melbourne, Australia / Glen Waverley Secondary College) for the first point in his collegiate career.
SC4 outshot Alpena 56-7 in the match, while taking 13 corner kicks to just three for the Lumberjacks. ACC’s goalkeeper Rubi Osti made 24 saves on 34 SC4 shots on goal, while the Skippers’ freshman Jakob Arnold (Lenox, Mich. / Anchor Bay) was the winner with two saves and one goal allowed.
Farinas finished with a game-best five points (one goal and four assists), while Cicero had a team-leading three goals. 10 different Skippers factored into scoring plays and six of them had two or more points. Farinas fired 14 shots (nine on goal) to lead all participants.
The Skippers will next be in action on Wednesday, September 16, on the road at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Mich. That contest will start a four-match road swing for SC4 that lasts the rest of September.
