SC4 partners with local restaurants, Elevate Meal Plan to offer meal plan options

St. Clair County Community College has partnered with local restaurants and Elevate Meal Plan to provide its students, employees, area professionals and community members with unique and affordable meal options, easy dine in, pre-ordering and pickup services at some of the area’s most popular venues via an online platform.

SC4 is one of just a handful of community partners—and the first community college—offering meal plan options through Elevate. Others include communities surrounding Cornell, the University of Michigan, Florida State University and the University of Virginia.

Current participating restaurants include Casey’s Pizza and Subs, Chef Shell’s Restaurant and Catering, The Exquisite Corpse Coffee House, Kate’s Downtown, Maria’s Downtown Café, Moe’s Corner Deli, Raven Café, Sail In Café and Convenience Store, SC4 Café and Sperry’s 2nd Floor Dinnerhouse.

Meal plans range between three and 105 meals and can be rolled over to ensure students do not lose money when their traditional dining hall meals expire at the end of a semester.

“Community colleges offering a meal plan is pretty uncommon, but we feel this meal plan fits well within our mission of maximizing student success,” said Vice President of Student Services Pete Lacey. “It’s a great complement to on-campus meal choices and will provide a wide variety of new options for students and employees.

“Not only that, it allows us to support and promote local restaurants in our community, which will contribute to greater local economic growth.”

SC4 opened its doors to its College Housing on Aug. 3 and is the first community college in southeastern Michigan to offer student housing. The new facility will accommodate approximately 80 college students and resident assistants annually.

Added College Housing Manager Nathanial Shrapnell, “We’re focused on providing our students with a full college experience. This meal plan plays a role in that.”

Join SC4 at ArtPrize and the Frederik Meijer Gardens, Sept. 22

PORT HURON – St. Clair County Community College is pleased to announce a community trip to ArtPrize and the Frederik Meijer Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The $85 bus trip, which is open all area residents, includes round-trip transportation, entrance to Frederik Meijer Gardens, lunch, a tram ride, maps, prizes, a Movie-on-the-Move (“Maudie” starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke) and refreshments.

ArtPrize is an international competition in which artists from around the world participate. Art is exhibited throughout Grand Rapids in museums, parks, restaurants, hotels, bridges, storefronts, and even in the rivers. Visit artprize.org for more information.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park promotes appreciation of gardens, sculptures and the arts. The trip will include the park’s annual exhibition of “Chrysanthemums and More!” – the largest exhibit in Michigan. Visit meijergardens.org for more information.

  • 12:30 p.m. Tour the park by tram ride
  • 2 p.m. Return to bus
  • 2:15 p.m. Arrive in Grand Rapids to explore ArtPrize venues and enjoy dinner on your own
  • 6:15 p.m. Return to bus
  • 6:30 p.m. Depart Grand Rapids
  • 9:30 p.m. Approximate return to SC4

Revamped college program focused on creating more skilled workers

As the need for skilled trade workers continues to grow, St. Clair County Community College is making changes to help meet the demand.

The institution completely revamped its workforce development program, now known as Professional Training Services with one goal in mind: To deliver high-quality instruction and training to employers and employees needing to improve their skills.

Former Skipper AJ Burton named Associate Head Coach at Southern Maine Community College

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— Southern Maine CC Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Director of Athletics Matt Richards has appointed AJ Burton, Brown City grad and former Skipper basketball player, to the position of Associate Head Coach effective this 2018-19 season.

AJ Burton 2In his first two seasons as an assistant, Burton helped the SeaWolves to a 41-18 mark, 23-7 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play. Men’s Basketball captured its third YSCC title in 2017 to make a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament appearance in the same year.

Coach Richards commented, “Coach Burton is so influential to the successes of this program. His engagement with our guys on and off the court has had such positive effects in developing team culture and academic achievement—this day-to-day in addition to off-season workouts, video breakdown, and practice planning. Associate Head Coach suits him well.”

In addition to his duties on the hardwood, Coach Burton works as an adjunct faculty member in the Sport Management degree program and also as game management staff in the fall and spring seasons.
