MARYSVILLE, Mich. — The St. Clair County Community College (SC4) women’s soccer squad (2-0 overall) started its season this weekend at SC4 Soccer Field at Morton Park. The Skippers controlled play the entire time en route to shutout victories over Parkland College (4-0) on Saturday night and Morton College (3-0) on Sunday afternoon.
SC4 will next be in action on Thursday, August 27, and Friday, August 28, against Genesee Community College and Erie Community College in New York.
VS. PARKLAND
Following an earlier delay of 90 minutes due to lightning and heavy rain, the Skippers and Cobras began play at 8:30 p.m. instead of the original 7 p.m. start. That did not stop the squad, however, as SC4 opened the scoring in the sixth minute courtesy of sophomore Grace Twiby (Middlesbrough, England / T6) and her first tally of the new campaign. Her goal was assisted by freshman Lucy Atherton (Culcheth, England / Culcheth) off a corner kick.
SC4 made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when Twiby netted her second in less than 20 minutes, this time from an assist by fellow second-year Skipper Grace Kennedy (Middlesbrough, United Kingdom / St. Michael’s Catholic School). SC4 and Parkland would battle it out for the rest of the half, but neither school could find twine again before intermission.
The Skippers’ final two markers just about a minute apart in the second half. Twiby completed an opening-night hat trick in the 71st minute, with a little help from sophomore Libby Noble ( Loughborough, England / Loughborough College) on the helper. Then, after almost scoring twice but having them taken away due to being offside, freshman Lucy Yuen (Hong Kong / Korean International School) finally cashed in with the first goal of her collegiate career in the 72nd minute. For the second straight time, Noble assisted to give her a pair of helpers for the night.
Just one more shot attempt was had by both sides combined in the final 17 minutes, as SC4 cruised to the win.
The Skippers held Parkland to no shots, so goalkeeper Kaylee Backers (Richmond, Mich. / Richmond) had a quiet night between the posts. The freshman picked up her first victory as goalie for the Skippers.
VS. MORTON
The Skippers aggressively pressured the Panthers from Morton College for the first 10 minutes but came up empty each time. MC finally broke through with an opportunity in the 10th minute when Gabriella Oliveira was fouled inside the goal area and received a penalty kick, but she sent her attempt wide left.
SC4 had its own penalty kick in the 18th minute, but the try from freshman Tessa Freeland (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair) was stopped by Morton goalkeeper Ariadna Ascanio.
After several corner kicks in a row and numerous chances at the net, the Skippers finally made good on the game’s first tally. Twiby buried her fourth goal of the season in two matches during the 21st minute, with Atherton gaining her second assist of 2026.
Noble notched her first goal of the campaign in the 34th minute off a nifty feed from freshman Pamela Prado (Imlay City, Mich. / Imlay City), who found the scoresheet for the first time in her collegiate career.
The only other goal of the afternoon came on a header from freshman Claira Taylor (Warren, Mich. / Warren Mott) during a scrum right near the goal line in the 77th minute. Her marker was assisted by Freeland for her first assist of the new year.
SC4 finally surrendered its first shot on goal of the season in the final minute of its second match, as a long-range attempt by the Panthers’ Auriani Ascanio went harmlessly into the hands of Backers.
