PETOSKEY, Mich. — The No. 17-ranked St. Clair County Community College (SC4) volleyball squad (7-3 overall) completed a sweep of the week following three more victories on Friday and Saturday afternoon at North Central Michigan College’s Timberwolves Quad inside Petoskey Plastics Arena. The Skippers downed the host NCMC team by a 3-1 mark in the opener on Friday, before a pair of 3-0 triumphs over Kellogg Community College and Alpena Community College on Saturday.
Paired with the Skippers’ trio of victories over Henry Ford, Kalamazoo Valley, and Kirtland on Wednesday at the Skippers Quad, SC4 recorded a flawless 6-0 ledger and wrapped up the weekend on a six-match winning streak.
Following the action in Petoskey, three student-athletes were named to the Buffalo Wild Wings & Corktown Pizza Timberwolves Quad All-Tournament Team for their efforts across the three contests. Sophomore Brooklynn Haack (New Baltimore, Mich. / Anchor Bay) was named Tournament MVP in addition to the spot on the All-Tournament Team following 37 kills in her three appearances. Fellow sophomore Addison Bolen (Maple Ridge, Mich. / Carson City-Crystal) and freshman Kylie Traver (Roscommon, Mich. / Roscommon) joined Haack on the squad.
After the busy week, the Skippers will play just once between Monday, August 31, and Tuesday, September 8. That will be a short trip to Delta College for a match on Friday, September 4, at 7 p.m.
VS. NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN (25-23, 22-25, 25-12, 25-9)
The Skippers handled the Timberwolves in four sets to grab the win on Friday afternoon. The first two sets were close, with each squad victorious in one, but the visitors drained NCMC in the final two sets with large triumphs of 13 and 16 points, respectively.
A large reason for the win was SC4’s ability to serve the volleyball, as the team managed 18 service aces to North Central Michigan’s five. Bolen led the category with four aces, while three Skippers had three each and one finished with two. SC4 also wrapped up the contest with a .282 hitting percentage, compared to .217 for the Timberwolves.
Haack had one of the finest performances of her collegiate career, as the sophomore totaled an even 20 kills and five errors on 41 attempts for a kill percentage of .366. It was the second time in her career that Haack had 20+ kills in a match, with the first being 26 against Pellissippi State Community College at the national championships last season.
Sophomore Allie Guza (Ubly, Mich. / Ubly) only had eight attempts, but dropped five of those to hit at a .625 clip for the contest. Traver and Bolen had 12 and 10 digs, respectively, while freshman Lucy Mercer (Otsego, Mich. / Otsego) amassed six block assists.
VS. KELLOGG (25-19, 25-16, 25-18)
The Skippers returned to Petoskey Plastics Arena on Saturday and began the day with a 3-0 shutout of the Bruins from Kellogg CC. SC4 won the three sets by margins of six, nine, and seven.
The second set was perhaps the best for SC4 in the neutral site affair, as the squad hit .500 with 13 kills and just one error on 24 attempts in the middle stanza.
Haack continued to showcase her abilities with 14 kills and a .333 kill percentage, while doubling the next closest Skipper in the kills department. However, sophomore Ava Oleski (Lexington Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) put in the most efficient performance with seven kills and no errors on 17 attempts (.412 percentage).
Bolen led the team with 14 assists, but freshman Alianna Sutberry (Portland, Mich. / Portland) was not too far behind with 11 assists. Traver had four service aces and nine digs for a strong effort.
VS. ALPENA (25-20, 25-22, 25-15)
SC4 won its sixth-straight match in the nightcap on Saturday against the Lumberjacks. SC4 managed to once again wear down ACC over the course of the match, as its 10-point win in the final set was its largest margin of victory in the three stanzas.
The Skippers did not hit that well in the victory (.180 kill percentage) but made an impact in other ways with 13 service aces and a few key blocks on the defensive side. Freshman Chloe Johnson (Macomb, Mich. / Utica) was key in that department with a solo block and a block assist.
Sophomore Bella McCamman (Otsego, Mich. / Otsego) had her best match of the three, as the outside hitter and defensive specialist recorded nine kills and only one error on 26 attempts for a .308 percentage. She also notched 11 digs, which was one off the team high set by Traver (12), and added on four service aces to lead the squad in that category.
