Testing Center and Placement Services

About the SC4 Testing Center

The Testing Center at St. Clair County Community College promotes academic integrity and student success. The SC4 Testing Center provides placement services for new students and proctoring testing services for classes, both on-campus and online, to SC4 students and non-SC4 students.

Every tester is required to schedule an appointment 12 hours before testing and no walk-in appointments are allowed. A pictured ID is required to test at SC4 Testing Center (school ID, driver’s license, passport, or military). Digital IDs are not accepted.

The Testing Center is located in the College Center. If you should need additional assistance or questions, please call (810) 989-5555 or email testing@sc4.edu.

The SC4 Testing Center offers a wide range of testing and placement services for students and the community, including providing testing for new students to assist with placing them into their first English and mathematics courses. We also provide proctoring for tests for SC4 classes, both on-campus and online.

The Testing Center is now in the College Center, which is located in the center of campus.

Hours of operation

Testing services are available by appointment only; there are no “walk-in” tests or exams. You can schedule a test by clicking the button above.

On-campus testing appointments are available according to this schedule:

Summer semester hours

Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.*

*The Testing Center will be closed on Fridays in June.

Fall/Winter semester hours

Monday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(Closed on campus holidays and weather closures)

Please allow the necessary time to complete your test. In other words, if your test will take two hours to complete, you should schedule your test to begin at least two hours before the Testing Center closes.

SC4 Faculty

Faculty may arrange testing for their students and courses by emailing their completed Proctor Form to testing@sc4.edu. Please submit the Proctor Form promptly.

Testing Center Guidelines and Rules

  • All students must schedule an appointment. No same-day testing, appointments, etc.
  • Students are required to bring photo ID. If students arrive without proper ID, they will not be tested.
  • If students’ tests are computer-based, you need to know your login.
  • Students should know the course name and number, the instructor’s name, and the number or title of the exam to be administered.
  • Scratch paper will be provided by the Testing Center and will be collected by the proctor at the end of the exam.
  • It is inappropriate to bring young children to the Testing Center. Please make arrangements accordingly.
  • Practicing academic honesty – cheating of any kind will not be tolerated and any incident will be reported to the instructor.
  • No test will be given after the test due date specified without written authorization from the instructor.
  • Only items designated by the instructor or Coordinator of the Testing Center will be permitted in the testing area. All other materials will be locked in a locker.
  • Any testing accommodations needed; you need to meet with the Testing Center Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the actual test date.

None of the following are allowed in the Testing Center

  • Hooded garment(s) of ANY Kind
  • Cell Phones
  • Electronic Devices
  • Any type of Bag, Backpack, Purse
  • All watches, Fitness Bands
  • Food
  • Coats of any kind
  • Scarves, Gloves, Mittens
  • Hats of any kind
  • Head Gear

The Testing Center is closed when the college is closed (i.e., scheduled breaks, inclement weather, etc.).

The Testing Center is under electronic surveillance/recording and has an official proctor (a person who monitors students during exams.)

Incoming students (other than high school guests or some transfer students) must submit SAT or ACT scores or take a placement exam in the SC4 Testing Center to be placed into their first English writing and mathematics class at SC4. Click the button below for details on this process.

Due to requirements from some of our testing providers, you may be asked to turn your pockets inside out to show that nothing is contained in them. Testing Center staff will not touch or “frisk” test-takers during the check-in process.

Only approved testing materials are allowed in the Testing Center.

Exceptions may be made for documented accommodations needs or religious reasons. Please discuss any needed exceptions with the Testing Center staff in advance of your test by calling (810) 989-5555. Last-minute accommodations may not be possible.

CIW/CTC is an IT and Web technology education and certification program. The CIW core curriculum focuses on the foundational standards and job skills that enable the Internet to function, including Web design, development, security, administration, networking and databases.

The College Level Examination Program is a group of standardized tests created and administered by the College Board. These tests assess college-level knowledge in thirty-six subject areas and provide a mechanism for earning college credits without taking college courses.

SC4 no longer administers the Compass placement tests from ACT. Beginning in September 2016, we have replaced Compass with Accuplacer (see above). SC4 does, however, still accept Compass placement scores that were taken before that date, and any Compass scores already in our system (whether taken at SC4 or elsewhere) remain valid for placement.

Empco, Inc. is a Michigan-based company specializing in testing services for public safety and municipal government agencies. Empco has a strong customer base in the State of Michigan and is rapidly increasing the number of customers it serves outside of Michigan.

Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI) is a United States company that provides exams and other study material to help prepare student nurses for their professional licensure exam. Schools often use HESI to help predict the student’s likelihood of success in tests such as the NCLEX-RN.

Meazure Learning provides testing and training design, development, and delivery services to certification and licensure organizations, corporations, educational institutions, government agencies, and trade and professional associations.

Some of SC4’s academic departments offer the opportunity to test out of a course or obtain credit for prior knowledge or experience through a test. The Testing Center administers many of these exams.

The Testing Center proctors tests and exams for on-campus classes, allowing students to take a test at a convenient time outside of regular classroom hours. Your instructor will give you information about how and when you take these tests.

The Testing Center also proctors tests and exams for online classes that require an in-person test or exam that can’t be taken online. Your instructor will give you information about how and when you take these tests.

SC4’s Testing Center cooperates with other colleges and universities, both in Michigan and beyond, to administer and proctor tests and exams. Many of these tests are for online courses offered by another school but require a supervised testing environment. There is a $20 proctor fee for out-of-state colleges and universities. Many of these tests are for online courses offered by another school but require a supervised testing environment. Your instructor for an external course will give you information about how and when you take these tests.

The ACT WorkKeys is a skills assessment test for those who are interested in or are currently working for employers that place an emphasis on the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC), which is the credential achieved by those who successfully complete the exam.

The ACT WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate is an assessment-based credential issued at four levels; Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The NCRC measures and certifies the essential work skills needed for success in jobs across industries and occupations.
