Athletic Roundup: Volleyball team drops match vs. Henry Ford after strong weekend

The St. Clair County Community College volleyball team came up short Tuesday, Oct. 3, against Henry Ford College in its Pink Match at the Fieldhouse.

The Skippers won the first game 25-21, but dropped the next two 25-27, 21-25. They took the fourth game 25-19 before falling in the fifth game 12-15.

Coach Ray Cornwell’s squad slipped to 2-3 in the conference and 12-13 overall. The Skippers are in fourth place in the MCCAA Eastern Conference.

At the Raider Challenge on the Grand Rapids CC campus last weekend, the Skippers went 3-1. They defeated Lakeland CC (3-0), Lake Michigan CC (3-1) and Lorain County CC (3-2) before losing to Muskegon CC (3-2).

The Skippers’ final home match is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, against Mott CC. It will be Sophomores Night.

CROSS COUNTRY

The women’s and men’s cross-country teams each finished second Friday, Sept. 29, at the Firebird Invitational. The race was held at the Hanson Hills Recreation Area in Grayling.

The Skippers return to action Friday, Oct. 6, at the Lansing CC Invitational.

GOLF

Freshmen Adam Lemoine (77) and Hunter Brandt (82) led the Skippers to a sixth-place finish Monday, Oct. 2, at the Thomas Howard Jr. Golf Invitational on the Lakes of Taylor course.

Rounding the scoring was Phil Lowe with a 95 and Alex Mayer a 98.

In a MCCAA Eastern Conference event Friday, Sept. 29 at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek, the Skippers came in seventh with a score of 338. Brandt and Mayer paced the squad with an 80 and 81, respectively.
