SC4 to offer health care information sessions

St. Clair County Community College (SC4)—a long-time leader in health care education—is pleased to offer upcoming information sessions for its health care programs.

Program information sessions are free and the first step for anyone interested in earning a health care degree from SC4. For those interested in nursing or radiologic technology programs, attending a session is mandatory.

At the heart of SC4’s transformative health sciences education lies its newly renovated Health Sciences Building (HSB). This cutting-edge facility serves as a hub for immersive learning experiences, providing students with a hospital simulation wing that replicates real-world medical settings and helps develop critical knowledge and skills.

SC4 also offers degree programs in allied health, respiratory therapy and therapeutic massage, which is a cooperative effort with the Lakewood School of Therapeutic Massage, as well as transfer pathways to other health care careers.

SC4, Lake Huron Medical Center to host health careers open house

During this event, you will have the opportunity to learn about the tuition reimbursement opportunities available at Lake Huron Medical Center, designed to assist you as you pursue various health care programs offered by SC4. As a long-standing leader in health sciences education, SC4 offers a comprehensive range of in-demand courses, programs, certificates, and transfer pathways.

Whether you are interested in nursing, medical assisting, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy or any other health care field, SC4 has the resources and expertise to help you achieve your goals. This event will provide you with a chance to explore the multitude of options available and gain valuable insights into the exciting world of health care.

Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Steven Amey

Current or most recent title and employer?
Director of the Law Enforcement Academy, Ferris State University

How did SC4 help prepare you?
My biggest takeaway from SC4 was the quality of the instructors. Still to this day I remember them from having attended and completed a degree in criminal justice and also minored in the German language classes with Frau Pillsbury. The real-life experiences shared in classes kept my interest and prepared me for my own career in law enforcement. While completing my graduate degrees I often returned to campus to see my instructors and frequently was a guest speaker in the same criminal justice classes that I once sat in. Eventually, I returned to teach at SC4 for several years and also helped spearhead the Ferris State University Criminal Justice Satellite still in place today at SC4. The quality, cost and convenience of the courses still today after all of these years is top notch and truly a benefit to the local community. This career is all about connections and without a doubt SC4 provides these connections.

What do you like most about what you do professionally?
Having gone full circle from being educated, a law enforcement career and now the Director of the Law Enforcement Academy at Ferris State University is a goal I set years ago. I enjoy teaching and creating the future of our men and woman in law enforcement. Sharing my experiences and career path for these students, many who come from SC4. is just a natural transition in my mind. I enjoy hearing the students say ” I am from Port Huron, or a little town called Yale, Capac, St. Clair, Lakeport, Port Sanilac, Deckerville, Carsonville, Clay Township, Algonac, Marysville, Marine City and so many places in St. Clair County and its outskirts. I just smile a little more when I hear the student tell me this because they too are continuing the legacy of SC4.

Did you transfer on and earn other degrees? If so, what degrees and from where?
Yes. I earned an associate degree in criminal justice from SC4, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ferris State University, a master’s degree in public administration with a leadership concentration from Central Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in instructional design and technology from Wayne State University.

How did SC4 help prepare you?
I was able to complete my degree in liberal arts at SC4 through the Blue Water Middle College Program. Since then, I have accelerated greatly in my undergraduate courses. I will be getting my bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism management from Grand Valley State University in August of 2023 and have plans to attend graduate school thereafter. SC4 and BWMC helped me to grow my professional endeavors by always encouraging me to think big. I am thankful for the position this College has put me in every day.

What do you like most about what you do professionally?
In my professional work, I am able to talk with guests every day, meet new people and expand my knowledge of the hospitality industry. Because of SC4 and BWMC, I am able to not only work in my field while in my degree but study a subject that I am extremely passionate about. Both of these programs truly accelerated my higher education journey. If I didn’t take classes at SC4 I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Did you transfer on and earn other degrees? If so, what degrees and from where?
I am currently a senior at Grand Valley State University and will receive my bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism management with an emphasis in lodging and tourism management in August of 2023! SC4 allowed me to be able to go into my bachelor’s degree program knowing exactly what I wanted and saved me huge amounts of money along the way.
