SC4 certified nurse aide program session to begin March 19

St. Clair County Community College’s certified nurse aide (CNA) training program will offer another session beginning March 19. The program prepares students to take the Michigan CNA exam and immediately enter the health care field as certified nurse aides in just 96 hours.

Students who successfully complete the program will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to begin careers as certified nurse aides, nursing assistants or hospital assistants in a number of health care settings. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for those with CNA skills is expected to increase by 12 percent in Michigan over the next six years.

“Becoming a CNA is a great way to get started in the health care field,” says Patti Tibble, director of SC4’s nursing program. “The skills students develop in our program provide a great foundation to continue their education and build a long, successful career in the field. Kathy McGrath is a wonderful instructor who really cares about students’ success and makes each session informative and fun.”

This program has no prerequisites, however applicants are strongly encouraged to take the free Accuplacer tests available through the college’s Testing Center in order to prepare for further studies in nursing, health care or other subjects in the future.

Admission to the program is competitive and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested applicants are encouraged to sign up for course ZPAH 159-02 as soon as possible to ensure their spot. SC4’s 17th annual Free College Day to take place March 16

St. Clair County Community College will hold its 17th annual Free College Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, on its Port Huron campus.

DSC_9729This college-wide community outreach program offers a day of free, hourlong classes for children and adults covering a wide range of subjects, including science, technology, arts, business and much more. Classes will be led by SC4 faculty, staff and community members volunteering their time to share their expertise and experiences with the community.

Classes begin at 9 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. While each class is completely free and open to the public, pre-registration is required. Those interested in attending can find full class details and register online at sc4.edu/freecollege.

Free College Day49.jpgThere also are drop-in sessions that require no registration, including hands-on activities in the Experience Center and its Dr. Bassam H. Nasr Natural Science Museum, opportunities to climb the SC4 Tower, and chances to experience the artwork at the SC4 Fine Arts Gallery.

The SC4 cafeteria will be open during the events. To maximize class time, attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch or preorder a lunch through the link on the Free College Day website.

Donors collaborate to support SC4 Experience Center vision

The SC4 Foundation and two Community Foundation donor-advised funds will gift a new Tarbosaurus skeleton cast to St. Clair County Community College’s Experience Center as part of a growing commitment to support the college’s long-term Experience Center vision and expansion.

SC4 to host 33rd Annual Sanilac County Academic Games Feb. 9

The 33rd Annual Raymond T. Dunbar Jr. Sanilac County Academic Games will take place this Saturday, Feb. 9, on St. Clair County Community College’s Port Huron Campus.

During the Academic Games, hundreds of students and coaches representing seven school districts in Sanilac County come together to challenge each other in four academic areas: science, mathematics, social studies and language arts.

The day will consist of three rounds of questioning to determine the winning school. Competition kicks off at 9 a.m., and the final round begins at 12:30 p.m. Questions are written by SC4 faculty members, who also will judge the competition.

Participating districts in the 2019 Academic Games include Sandusky Community Schools, Peck Community Schools, Marlette Community Schools, Deckerville Community Schools, Croswell-Lexington Community Schools, Carsonville-Port Sanilac Schools and Brown City Schools.
