Top D1 and D2 MHSAA volleyball teams heading to SC4 for state quarterfinals

St. Clair County Community College is pleased to host the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) state volleyball tournament quarterfinal beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in SC4 Fieldhouse. The Division 2 quarterfinal match is set for 6 p.m., followed by the Division 1 match at 7:30 p.m.

“Port Huron is the ideal setting for the MHSAA Division 1 and 2 volleyball quarterfinals for 2019,” said Michelle McCulloch, the SC4 volleyball coach. “The facilities are top notch, a testament to the commitment and devotion that our college has to athletics and our students here at SC4.”

McCulloch added, “We’re committed to providing a fun fan experience and competitive atmosphere. This event is an exciting addition to our already busy sports calendars, and is another example of how the college is helping bring more activity to downtown and growing our interest in athletics at SC4.”

The winner of the D1 quarterfinal will advance to the state semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Kellogg Center in Battle Creek. The D2 quarterfinal winner will head to Kellogg Center 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22. The four state title matches are set for Saturday, Nov. 23.

Professor Tangie Christmas named NAACP award recipient

St. Clair County Community College Professor of Speech Tangie Christmas received the Geri Kimbro Humanitarian Award at the Port Huron Branch of the NAACP’s 60th annual Fight for Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday evening.

Cross country Skippers to head to NJCAA National Championships

St. Clair County Community College is pleased to announce its men’s cross country team and two individual members of the women’s cross country team have qualified for the NJCAA National Division I Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Nov. 9.

Skippers Caitlyn Rogers, Izabella Gowen, Cole Broecker, Dylan Castle, Tyreice McArthur, Jack DeMara, Nathan Johns and Elias Pagurko will compete in the competition. To qualify, the men’s team finished fourth and Rogers and Gowen were in the top 15 runners at the Region 12 Championship.

“We’re very proud of Caitlyn, Izabella and our entire men’s team for qualifying for the national championship,” said Craig Dickinson, Skippers cross country coach. “They’ve worked hard both on and off the course this season. We look forward to cheering them on as they represent SC4 on the national stage in Albuquerque next Saturday.”

SC4 announces free winter concerts, continues fall series

St. Clair County Community College is pleased to release its winter concert calendar for the upcoming semester. Similar to fall 2019 concerts, all winter 2020 concerts are free admission.

Stone Sound Collective 2The winter concert calendar kicks off Thursday, Jan. 16, as the Stone Sound Collective (pictured at right) heads to campus to perform celebrated world percussion traditions of Africa and India with the lyricism of cello and saxophone. The series also features performances on Thursday, April 9, by Detroit’s Queen of the Blues Thornetta Davis (pictured above), a highly celebrated, award-winning performer who has headlined countless shows and opened for legendary blues and R&B greats such as Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Etta James and many more.

In addition, the winter concert schedule also showcases evening performances by the college’s Symphonic and Jazz Bands and the SC4 Choir. Check out the full schedule of performances below and find complete details at sc4.edu/arts.

Those interested in reserving free seats must call 810-989-5789. Seats are reserved by ticket until 15 minutes prior to showtime at which time all individuals are admitted until the theatre is full.
