PORT HURON – St. Clair County Community College dual-enrolled student Lucy Wickings will head to Harvard University this fall to study psychology, a major made clearer thanks to her time spent at her local community college.
Wickings, who is also a senior at Port Huron High School, enrolled in two psychology courses this past academic year at St. Clair County Community College. According to Wickings, that experience showed her just how interested she was in psychology and gave her a glimpse into what to expect as she begins her time as full-time college student.
“I think it definitely showed me the difference in the dynamic of being a college student,” she said. “I learned what it’s like to be a college student, where you’re treated like an adult, and you have the responsibility of getting to class on your own.”
The first-generation college student currently has aspirations of a future law degree as well, specifically in criminal defense or immigration law.
“My grandma was deported before I was born, and my dad was in prison for 10 years,” Wickings said. “These life experiences have instilled in me a passion for representing others in similar situations. Right now, I don’t believe I would ever lose passion in those areas.”
According to Wickings, the acceptance letter from Harvard took her by surprise.
“I waited a minute before I opened it, and it said that I got in. I think I screamed,” Wickings said.
Wickings will head to Boston to start classes in August.
