Learning about their past through science

Biology students

Jacob Madden wanted his lab to be perfect on Thursday, Nov. 3, not just for the grade, but also for the chance at results which could tell him where his family came from.

Madden was one of the students in St. Clair County Community College professor Dave Sheldon’s class to take part in a lab that will allow them to trace back their lineage by thousands of years on their maternal side.

Students extracted their own DNA and prepped it for testing.

The lab is one way that Sheldon is making Biology personal and accessible for his students.
