PORT HURON – Area middle and high school students interested in gaining STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) experience over the summer can do so at St. Clair County Community College.
Classes range from drafting and design to music composition and from anatomy and physiology to robotics — and much in between. Offerings include:
Heart Basics: Anatomy and Physiology
Ages: 14-18
Learn the basics of heart structure and function. Dissect a heart, interpret ECGs, experiment with regulating heart rate, and more.
Introduction to Emergency Medical Services
Ages: 14-18
Learn about the field of emergency medical services and the job of the basic EMT and paramedic. This hands-on session will include an overview of emergency care including patient assessment, and many advanced EMS skills. This session also includes a tour of a Tri-Hospital EMS ambulance and advance life support equipment.
Beginner’s Crash Course to Graphic Design
Ages: 14-18
This four-day class includes project conception, layout and design, including an overview of Adobe Creative Suite featuring Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.
Introduction to Robotics
Ages: 12-18
This class will give students an introduction to the fascinating field of robotics. Basic components, coordinate systems and programming concepts will be covered.
Fundamentals of Computer-Aided Drafting for Middle School
Ages: 11-14
Learn to draw basic shapes using computer-aided drafting.
Fundamentals of Computer-Aided Drafting for High School
Ages: 14-18
Learn to draw basic shapes using computer-aided drafting.
Ceramics- Design and Implementation
Ages: 14-18
Learn safe studio practices. Design and create a ceramic project using the pinch, coil and slab techniques. Have an opportunity to try the wheel.
Fiber Art- Silk Screening and Dyeing
Ages: 14-18
This course is an introduction to fiber art and surface design. Students will learn how to make and use a silk screen, shibori dye with indigo, rust dye, and create bleach out designs on fabric.
Music Composition Workshop
Ages: 14-18
Students will gain knowledge of the elements and principles of music composition. With this experience, students will have an advantage in future musical endeavors and even academic settings.
Beginner Piano Classes
Ages: 12-18
Learn the basics of the piano and how to play some songs.
Other opportunities to sing along with the SC4 Community Choir, play an instrument in the Symphonic Band, and sign up for private music lessons or athletic camps are available.
