SC4 to host annual Golf Classic June 14, benefiting student-athletes

The St. Clair County Community College Athletic Department will host its annual Golf Classic on Friday, June 14, at the Port Huron Golf Club in Fort Gratiot Township. Participants will enjoy 18 holes of golf with friends to help support athletic scholarships and college athletics projects.

“We are constantly amazed by the many ways this community supports our student-athletes each year,” said SC4 Athletic Director Dale Vos. “This event is a great opportunity for us to come together and have some fun while creating impactful opportunities for these hard-working students.”

The four-person scramble is limited to the first 32 teams to register. The cost to enter is $125 per golfer or $500 per team, with payment due by Friday, May 31.

Schedule

Residential living enhances college experience at SC4

Emily Fleischmann likes to hang out with friends in her dorm’s spacious common area, where they cook dinner, watch movies or play games. It’s typical college stuff, but these students attend community college, which typically lacks the convenience and bonding experiences that come with student housing.

Last fall, St. Clair County Community College (SC4) became the first community college in Southeast Michigan, and one of only a few throughout the state, to offer student housing. Known as the Dock, the facility is right in the heart of vibrant downtown Port Huron, just a short walk to the college campus.

SC4 to hold free health sciences information sessions throughout the summer

Throughout the summer months, St. Clair County Community College will hold free information sessions on main campus for a number of its in-demand health sciences programs.

Attending an info session is the first step for anyone interested in earning a health sciences degree from SC4. For those interested in nursing programs, attending a session is mandatory.

Schedule:

Medical Assisting

  • 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 5
  • 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 8
  • 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 17
  • 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1

All medical assisting info sessions take place in the Applied Technology Center, Room 119.

The medical assisting program is a 12-month certificate program that prepares students to perform various clinical and administrative duties in a variety of health care settings. Graduates gain the knowledge and skills necessary for further health sciences education and are eligible to take the national credentialing exam.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

  • 10 a.m. Monday, June 10 – Welcome Center, Room 210

The MRI program, offered through a partnership with other Michigan community colleges in the Michigan Radiologic and Imaging Science (MiRIS) Consortium, provides a thorough foundation in procedures, pathophysiology, and physics to prepare students for in-demand careers as MRI technologists in hospitals, physician offices and imaging centers.

Health Information Technology

  • 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 5 – North Building, Room 108
  • Evening appointments are available by contacting Program Director Karen Wilson at klwilson@sc4.edu.

The health information technology program prepares students for a variety of careers in the health care field. Students learn the process of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information, which is vital to providing quality patient care, supporting medical education and research, and more. Graduates are eligible to take the nationally recognized Registered Health Information Technician Exam.

Radiologic Technology

  • 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 5
  • 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 6
  • 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 17
  • 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1

All radiologic technology info sessions take place in the Welcome Center, Room 206.

The radiologic technology program prepares students to become radiologic technologists by combining imaging technology with patient care skills to create quality radiography images. It has a five-year, 100 percent first-time passage rate on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Exam, a national registry exam that grants certification in radiologic technology.

Nursing programs

Practical Nursing

  • 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 13 – Main Building, Room 303
  • 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 – Main Building, Room 312

The Practical Nursing program prepares graduates to take the state exam to become a licensed practical nurse. This program prepares students to work within the interdisciplinary team under the direct supervision of an RN in a variety of settings such as long-term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, doctor’s offices and home health care.

Nursing Transition Program

  • 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 13 – Main Building, Room 303
  • 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 – Main Building, Room 312

The ADN transition program is designed for licensed health care professionals who want to become registered nurses. The program is an accelerated course of study designed to expand upon previous education and experience.

Associate Degree Nursing

  • 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 – Main Building, Room 312

The Associate Degree Nursing program prepares students for work with an interdisciplinary team in health care with multiple areas of entry such as surgery, mental health, obstetrical nursing and other adult and child areas of care. Graduates are eligible to take the national licensure examination to become a registered nurse.

SC4 announces community trip to see ‘Billy Elliot’ at Stratford Festival Theatre

St. Clair County Community College has announced a community trip — open to all area residents — to the Stratford Festival Theatre for a production of “Billy Elliot” with Music by Elton John on Sunday, June 23.

For $150, participants can enjoy luxury bus travel, priority seating at the theatre, a post-show chat with cast members, dinner at the scenic Marquee Restaurant overlooking the Avon River, refreshments and prizes.

“I think these trips are a great opportunity for our college and community to come together and share in some truly special cultural experiences,” says Bonnie DiNardo, SC4’s director of community education and relations.

Located in Stratford, Ontario, the Stratford Festival Theatre is North America’s largest classical repertory theatre company, presenting a dozen or more productions across four distinct venues each year.

“Billy Elliot” is set in a mining town riven by a bitter national strike, where 11-year-old Billy lives with his bereaved family. But Billy’s discovery of his talent for dance awakens in him a passion that will transform his life and win the hearts of his whole community. With its inspirational story, moving dance numbers and music by pop legend Elton John, this gritty new take on the smash-hit show — reimagined for Stratford — really packs a punch.

Space is limited. Those interested must register by June 16.

  • 8:30 a.m. – Depart SC4 College Center parking lot.
    Enjoy contests, trivia and prizes on the luxury
    bus.
  • 10:30 a.m. – Enjoy downtown Stratford, take time to shop,
    explore and have lunch on your own.
  • 1 p.m. – Return to bus for five-minute ride to
    Stratford Festival Theatre. Explore the
    gardens, museum and gift shop.
  • 2 p.m. – “Billy Elliot”
  • 4:30 p.m. – Post-show chat.
  • 5:30 p.m. – Dinner at the scenic Marquee Restaurant.
  • 7:30 p.m. – Return to Port Huron.
  • 9:30 p.m. – Arrive at SC4.
