St. Clair County Community College has named Alex Morang as the first wrestling coach in school history.
Morang will lead the Skippers in their inaugural 2017-18 season.
“We’re excited to have Alex leading our wrestling program,” SC4 Athletic Director Dale Vos said. “He brings a love of the sport and the energy level we need to get this program off the ground and help it reach its potential.”
Morang recently graduated from Olivet College, where he earned two varsity letters as a wrestler. He also wrestled at Grand Valley State University, where he was a National Collegiate Wrestling Association national qualifier in 2014.
A Richmond High School graduate, Morang served as a volunteer assistant for the Blue Devils wrestling program from 2013-15. He was a four-year letter winner at Richmond, a member of three state championship wrestling teams (2010, 2011 and 2012), and was a team captain on the 2011 and 2012 teams. He was a state qualifier in 2011.
“I feel like I’m about to wrestle in the state finals right now — I’m excited,” Morang said. “I’m really excited to have an impact on some people’s lives, and give people in this area a chance to wrestle collegiately that they haven’t had before. We have so much good talent in this area that hasn’t had a chance to go anywhere, and this is going to give those guys an opportunity to really change their lives. I’m honored to be the guy that is taking the task of getting these guys to where they want to be. I’m thrilled.”
