Athletic Roundup: Skippers golf finishes eighth at Schoolcraft Invitational

The Skipper golf team finished up the fall competition with an eighth-place finish Monday, Oct. 9, at the Schoolcraft College Invitational.

SC4 recorded a score of 348. Oakland CC won the event at Walnut Creek Country Club with a 293.

Hunter Brandt, an Almont graduate, led the squad with a 77. St. Clair grad Adam Lemoine finished with an 83, while Phil Lowe (Brown City) and Brandon Saikowski (Richmond) shot 91 and 97, respectively.

The Skippers are scheduled to begin spring play April 13, 2018, at the Oakland CC Invitational.

VOLLEYBALL

The Skippers evened their record at 3-3 in the MCCAA Eastern Conference with a 3-0 victory Tuesday, Oct. 10, over Schoolcraft College on the road.

Coach Ray Cornwell’s squad, which is 15-15 overall, went 2-2 on its trip to the Catawba Valley CC Invitational this past weekend. The Skippers split two matches vs. Bob Jones University (3-2 win) and Spartanburg Methodist (3-1 loss) Friday, Oct.7. They defeated Northern Virginia CC 3-1 and dropped a 3-2 decision to Catawba Valley 3-2, Saturday, Oct. 7.

The Skippers’ final regular-season home match is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, against Mott CC. It will be Sophomores Night. The sophomores on this year’s squad are Mackenzie Bryant, Jodi Kilpela, Erica VanderHaar, Erica LaBaere, Muranda Dore and Madison Seegraves.

CROSS COUNTRY

The women’s cross-country team came in fifth at the Lansing CC Invitational Friday, Oct. 6, with a score of 489.

Due to injuries, the men’s team failed to field enough runners (five) for a score.

Audrey Sylvia paced the Skippers with time of 22 minutes, 6.6 seconds, which was good enough for 89th place. Cat Gryspeerd came in 113th at 23:12.5 and Madison Woodall was 117th at 23:28.5. The fourth and fifth runners were Katrina Roy (165, 36:31.2) and Nicole Burgess (166, 36:31.4).

Coach James Frank’s male runners – Brandon Hughes, Josh Johnson, Johnathon Ridley – turned in their best times of the season. Hughes crossed the finish line in 28:36.0 (93rd), while Johnson ran 29:02.4 (105) and Ridley 29:33.7 (126).
