PORT HURON, Mich. — St. Clair County Community College (SC4) proudly celebrated America’s 250th anniversary this week by recognizing the service and sacrifice of veterans and military-connected students during a special America 250 celebration held June 29 through July 2 in the SC4 Veterans Lounge.
The event commemorated the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence while providing an opportunity for veterans, active-duty service members and military-connected students to connect with campus resources as they prepare for the upcoming fall semester.
Throughout the week, visitors to the Veterans Lounge received complimentary American flags and SC4 t-shirts while meeting with the Veterans Services team for personalized fall registration assistance and education benefits support.
At SC4, support for veterans extends well beyond special events. Located in Room 101 of the Welcome Center, the Veterans Lounge provides a dedicated space where student veterans, active-duty military personnel and military-connected students, including spouses, partners and dependents, can study, connect with fellow students and access the resources they need to succeed. The lounge features comfortable study areas, computers, free printing, and a welcoming environment that fosters both academic success and community.
The college’s Veterans Services office offers comprehensive support, including assistance with federal and state education benefits, priority registration, military transcript evaluations, academic advising and connections to campus and community resources. These services help ease the transition from military service to higher education while empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals.
SC4’s commitment to serving veterans and military-connected students has earned statewide recognition. The college is proud to be designated a Gold-Level Veteran-Friendly School by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, the highest distinction awarded through the state’s Veteran-Friendly School Program. This designation recognizes SC4’s dedication to providing exceptional support, resources and opportunities for veterans, active-duty service members and their families throughout their educational journey.
“At SC4, honoring our veterans and military-connected students means more than recognizing their service. It means creating an environment where they are supported, welcomed and positioned to succeed,” said Sarah Rutallie, Chief of Staff at SC4. “Through our Veterans Lounge, dedicated Veterans Services team and ongoing campus initiatives, we are committed to ensuring those who have served our country, and the families who support them, have access to the resources, community and opportunities they deserve. It is both a privilege and a responsibility for SC4 to stand alongside our military-connected students as they pursue their educational and career goals.”
The America 250 celebration served as both a tribute to the nation’s history and an opportunity to strengthen connections within the SC4 military community. As veterans and military-connected students prepare for the upcoming semester, SC4 remains committed to providing personalized support from enrollment through graduation.
Veterans, active-duty military personnel and military-connected students interested in enrolling at SC4 or learning more about available services are encouraged to visit the Veterans Services office in the Welcome Center or contact the office at veterans@sc4.edu.
